A view toward Boston’s Logan Airport
On me: I have traveled to 61 countries in the last 30 years. While I have slowed down recently, wherever I am, I carry it all in my head and heart. I remember the people, how they connected with me, and what they taught me. I remember the sites and the sounds and the smells (not all of them good!). I remember the stupid shit that I did and hope that I don’t repeat it, but we all make crappy decisions sometimes. And I am still learning.
So while I sit at home, remembering and writing, I wonder where next?:
- Costa Rica – because of their commitment to the environment and protecting wildlife, they elected a female president in 2010, and pura vida. I’ve been there twice and it’s one of those places that lodged in my heart forever.

- Cuba – another place I adored and did not want to leave – the art, the architecture, the food (yes, that’s improved dramatically), the music, dance, the people.

- Turkey – because after my spark had long worn down, I visited Morocco in 2017 and the food, art and architecture reignited my love of exploring new places. And then as I was writing this piece, Rick Steves’ episode on Western Turkey came on my local PBS station. Life sends you signs sometimes. This is what I wrote down from Rick: “From the port of Kusadasi, we wander the streets of ancient Ephesus, soak in a natural spa at Pamukkale, learn why the dervishes whirl at Konya [home of Rumi], munch lunch in a Turkish pizzeria, and cruise the Mediterranean on a traditional Turkish gulet from Antalya. Turkey is a mighty nation whose ancient heritage, Muslim faith, and western ways are coming together…and we’ll see how.” Right?! And I’ve been told lots of vegetarian eating options.
- Shanghai, China – because I have a friend who is moving there for a job with the U.S. government, I had an absolute blast visiting family living in Beijing several years ago. I have somewhat of a preference for visiting people to get more of an insider experience.
- Yellowknife, Canada to see the Northern Lights – admittedly, this one is probably a lonnnggg way off. It takes a dog’s day to get there from Boston.
